about

The name of this band is The Minors.

Much had happened with our little band in the time since our first gig. I mean, nothing as far as public performance, hit singles, and world domination was concerned, but we continued to get tighter, both as our musical chops and tastes matured. At some point during this time, Andrew and I got way into Rush (Bryan was not a fan) and spent a lot of time working on shitty covers of their songs. We also spent a few weekends in the back room of my house, with my dad coaching us on classic rock cover songs, which also entered our repertoire.

At some point before this show, Bryan left the band. I'm not sure if he got mad and quit or if we kicked him out for not liking Rush or whatever, but he was out. We still had this gig coming up so we drafted Errickson Wilcox, who lived on my street, and he added keyboards to the band (handing the low end as well). We rehearsed for what seemed like months but was probably really just two weeks, during which time we wrote some new songs and adapted a few others. A day or two before this gig, Bryan was back in the band. Again, not sure if he asked to come back or if we begged him to come back, but he was back (with very little time to learn all the tunes).

Our newly minted quartet performed for the second time, in the same spot as the first, in Andrew's backyard. The occasion was a 4th of July pool party for members of the Mount Vernon Guard Fife & Drum Corps (of which three of us were members). We started our day in uniform, performing at Mount Vernon Estate, as we did every year, and we ended our day with a rock show. Damn good fun for a bunch of 14/15 year olds.

Given our aforementioned Rush obsession, it should come as no surprise that our set contained five of their songs (as well as my long ass drum solo that quoted Neil Peart's solo). None of them are particularly good, though "The Weapon" turned out decent.

After this gig, the band would continue to morph and it wasn't long before I flew the coop. Andrew and Bryan would continue playing together for at least a decade, in various bands, while I went on to....well, if you are here then you know. One of my big regrets is that we did not record more. There are a couple of rehearsal tapes but that's it. Then again, perhaps it's better to romanticize the music by relying only on fond memories. Those were good times. Dig this nasty little set.
