about

The name of this band is Guido & The Blowfish

In the summer of 1991, I got a call from a former classmate, Kyle Crosby, to come over and jam. By the end of the session, we had a band that also featured his brother Kevin on guitar (who wowed me on day one by playing "Mood For A Day" by Steve Howe) and Frank Feist on drums. We spent the summer working up a set of songs, some of which were Kevin's prog/fusion instrumentals, a couple were Frank's, and a handful of my originals. I think Kevin came up with the name and we had absolutely nothing to do with Hootie & The Blowfish, who was still half a decade away from entering the public consciousness.

We soon became regulars at this monthly coffeehouse which took place at a local Unitarian church, and we played there pretty much every month, at least for a while. Eventually we were given a headline spot, which happened to be the night before my 18th birthday. We were getting ready to make an album and this show was, more or less, a dry run of that LP, almost exactly in order. We also worked up a song by one of the Crosby's friends, Richard Dunbar, which would be played at the end of our set.

So we get to the venue and are setting up our gear (there, the headliner played first and got 45min) and somehow, in the midst of the tangle of cables and shit, Kevin's guitar fell off its stand and broke. This was his Rickenbacker 12-string, which was a vital, signature part of our sound. Kevin completely blew his top, screaming and cussing and, when reminded that he was in a church, screamed "I don't give a shit if we are in a fucking church" which, 31 years later, still makes me crack up.

We pushed through, however, and Kevin played the set on his backup guitar, and we went down a storm. It was a really great night. The following morning, my dad took me to buy a new bass for my birthday (up to that point, I was playing on a borrowed bass) and that night the band reconvened at my house for a big huge bash of a jam session. We'll save that story for another volume...
